REF: Motor Vehicle/Pedestrian Accident

On April 18, 2000 at 0646 hours, the Elyria Police Department responded to a motor vehicle/pedestrian accident at the intersection of 4th Street and East River Street.
An investigation was begun and the following was ascertained: Sgt. Lynn Robinson of the Elyria Police Department was on routine patrol in a marked Elyria Police Department cruiser. He was northbound in the left turn lane of East River Street at the intersection of 4th Street. Once Sgt. Robinson received a green traffic light for his lane of travel he proceeded to make a left turn westbound onto 4th Street.
At the same time two pedestrians were walking northbound on the west side of East River Street and were utilizing the sidewalk and the crosswalk as they crossed 4th Street.
Sgt. Robinson failed to see the pedestrians as they traversed the crosswalk as he began his left turn. Upon seeing the pedestrians, Sgt. Robinson took evasive action but could not prevent his vehicle from striking the two pedestrians.
